About
Theater Magdeburg is the principal municipal theatre in Magdeburg, the capital of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. It was established in 2004 through the merger of the Theater der Landeshauptstadt and the Freie Kammerspiele, creating a four-genre institution with its own ensembles for music theatre (opera), ballet, drama and concerts.
The theatre organization comprises several key venues: the historic Opernhaus on Universitätsplatz (originally built in 1907 and modernized after war damage and fire), the Schauspielhaus for dramatic productions, and the open-air festival stage DomplatzOpenAir, a summer highlight of large musical and theatre events in the city center.
Each year, Theater Magdeburg produces around 30 new works and presents about 1,000 performances, ranging from grand opera, ballet and symphony concerts to musicals, operettas, contemporary drama and cross-disciplinary projects. The theatre also focuses on productions for children and young audiences and community outreach through educational programmes, workshops and participatory ensembles.
