About
The Place exists to develop, nurture and celebrate dance ideas and experiences for all. Watch and enjoy dance in our theatre, on tour or online, study dance with some 250 of the most diverse and extraordinary dance artists at London Contemporary Dance School or with other young people in our Centre for Advanced Training. Join like-minded artists to develop your ideas, take a dance class whether you are 6 or 60, work with us to bring more dance to your school or community group or connect with us through any other way that is relevant to you.
We are committed to powering your imagination through dance. Supported by a culture of innovation, risk taking & collaboration we strive to create extraordinary experiences with and for you.
Today, The Place engages hundreds of artists, students, dancers, and audiences on site and digitally, pursuing a world with more dance. Since opening in 1969 as London Contemporary Dance School and home to London Contemporary Dance Theatre, it has remained a leading hub for innovation, education, and performance. Guided by its founding values and the vision of Robin Howard, who believed dance could transform lives, The Place unites training, creation, and presentation into a single, globally respected institution. Building on the legacy of artistic leaders including Robert Cohan and Richard Alston, The Place has continually evolved—supporting generations of artists, pioneering degree-level dance education, and fostering international exchange. Today, under collaborative leadership, it champions diversity, risk-taking, and artistic development through performance, education, touring, and digital work, empowering artists and audiences while shaping the future of contemporary dance.
