About
ODC is dedicated to the lifecycle of the artistic process. Through our company, school and theater, we aim to inspire audiences, cultivate artists, engage community, and foster diversity and inclusion through dance.
In 1976, a yellow school bus arrived in the Bay Area carrying 16 dancers, musicians, and artists—marking a defining chapter in ODC’s journey. Founded in 1971 by Artistic Director Brenda Way and originally named Oberlin Dance Collective, ODC was grounded in a pluralistic, urban vision of dance. Nationally recognized for its entrepreneurial spirit, ODC became the first modern dance company in the U.S. to own its own theater in 1979, later expanding with the ODC Dance Commons in 2005 and further growth in 2022. Having endured eviction, earthquakes, and economic upheaval, ODC is now a national center for contemporary dance. It encompasses a touring professional company, a school serving all ages, a theater supporting artists at every stage, and a health initiative promoting lifelong movement. Together, these programs fuel creativity, connection, and cultural vitality in San Francisco and beyond.
