About
HJS strives to create an open, diverse and safe climate for our dancers, teachers, staff and board, where everyone feels respected, embraced and celebrated for their differences.
We work on building a community that values everyone for their contribution, regardless of race, color, gender, age, ethnicity, socio-economic or cultural background, physical disabilities, religion or sexual orientation. If you have special needs, please don’t hesitate to inform us. All of our classes and workshops are taught in English and are open to dancers with a professional level and training background.
The Henny Jurriëns Studio (HJS) was founded in 1995 as a non-profit by Gary Feingold, Ineke Drabbe, and Esther Boatang to provide open training for professional dancers. Over 28 years, it has become one of Europe’s leading professional training centers. In 2023, Feingold and Drabbe stepped down, and HJS is now led by Artistic Director Evan Schwarz. Named after the beloved Dutch dancer Henny Jurriëns, HJS is an open training center—not a school or academy—serving Amsterdam’s freelance dance community. Based in the Chassé Dance Studios, a refurbished former church, HJS offers year-round daily ballet and contemporary classes, workshops, masterclasses, labs, and intensives. It maintains high technical standards while serving as a hub for independent dancers, teachers, choreographers, and producers.
HJS is a partner of the Julidans Festival and collaborates with most of the major dance companies and dance academies in the Netherlands.
