How to prepare yourself for a remote job interview as a dancer? Many Dance Companies and Organizations are now widely using remote interviews for their candidates. How to do your best if you have one? Follow our best practices and tips to maximize the chances to be the candidate they’re seeking.
1. Prepare yourself for a remote job interview (literally)
- Having some pre-written answers could be a good strategy, especially because no one will be able to see your desktop during the interview. If you have a good memory you can still have them just in your mind. But if you feel quite nervous before, having some answers written down will make you feel better.
- Visit your future employer’s website to check for possible questions. This is the best way to prepare yourself for a remote job interview.
- Have an aswer for the following questions: 1) Why do you want this job? 2) What are your strenghts and your weaknesses? 3) Why do you think you are the right candidate for this job? 4) How did you find us? 5) What did you like of our Company? 6) How do you manage stress usually?
2. Look professional
- Wear professional attire (a pajama is not the best option)
- Appear poised and professional even with your body language
- Make sure your devices are working perfectly (we know how it can be annoying to lose the connection during the call or not having the most updated Zoom version which means: not being able to see the other person, not being able to be seen, not being able to be heard…)
- Find a quiet place where to have the call (the place should stay quiet for a while so just because the coffee shop where you are right now looks quiet it doesn’t mean it’s gonna stay quiet for the whole afternoon, thnk about it)
3. Be human, don’t be fake
- Just because you’re a candidate it doesn’t mean you have to act like a robot. If you’re under pressure you can let your interviewer know and put a smile on your face because of it. Things such as “I’m sorry, I am a bit nervous, but you know, as a dancer I prefer to dance rather than talk”. Phrases like this one can let you release some stress.
- Smile. Looking professional doesn’t mean to look angry, sad or too serious. Some studies demonstrate that smiling can make you feel more creative and blocks stress and bad emotions. Also, it makes your employer to have a very positive impression about you.
