In the Hong Kong Ballet’s new production dinosaurs are back to life (almost). In this new masterpiece signed by 59 Productions, Nico Muhly (New York based composer) and the acclaimed Hong Kong Ballet Artistic Director Septime Webre, dance, music and digital technology create an incredible show. The name of the show is Sam and her Amazing Book of Dinosaurs.
The story
The new Hong Kong Ballet show where dinosaurs come back to life features Sam. She is the “Nine-year-old protagonist who moves to a new neighbourhood in Hong Kong and faces the daunting challenge of making new friends and starting over at a different school. One morning, her teacher gives her a dusty old dinosaur encyclopaedia, from which she discovers magical powers! Inside the yellowing pages, she discovers a portal that transports her back to prehistoric times!”. Below a scene from the show (HK Ballet).
The project
Mark Grimmer, scriptwriter of the show and a director at 59 Productions said in an interview to the SCMP:
“When you go into the theatre, you see this large-scale book, both a physical piece of scenery and a canvas for projection mapping. It very much integrates the arts and technology to bring the story to life […]”
Another important thing is that they really tried to guide the spectator focus through the stage. This is something really hard to achieve, especially when you have incredible visual effects taking place during the choreographies. Grimmer adds: “There are times in the show that we really want people to focus on the beautiful dance taking place on stage and the music, not looking at whizzy visuals going on in the background.”
We’re really sure that the Hong Kong Ballet dinosaurs (including choreographies and FX) will make you live a unique experience in the past, while using the arts of today and the technologies of the future.
