Star Dancers Ballet was founded in 1965 by the late Ruriko Tachikawa, following the success of a landmark project that united leading ballet dancers from across Japan under the direction of renowned New York–based choreographer Antony Tudor. This collaboration marked the beginning of the company and shaped its artistic vision.

From the outset, the company has pursued the goal of creating a national ballet rooted in Japan while engaging deeply with international traditions. Its repertoire includes original works by Japanese choreographers such as The Nutcracker and Dragon Quest, alongside classical masterpieces by Sir Peter Wright and modern and contemporary works by choreographers including George Balanchine and William Forsythe, many presented as Japan premieres.

In 2015, Star Dancers Ballet established a Junior Company to nurture young talent, with graduates now performing in ballet companies in Japan and abroad. Committed to social engagement, the company also offers inclusive programmes for children, people with Parkinson’s disease, and audiences with disabilities. Approaching its 60th anniversary in 2025, Star Dancers Ballet continues to connect ballet and society through excellence, education, and community engagement.
