About
The Staatsballett Berlin is Germany’s largest ballet company, with 79 dancers from 30 nations. It is unique in presenting its diverse repertoire on three major opera stages: the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin, and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Founded in 2004 through the merger of the ballet ensembles of these three houses, the company is an independent institution within the Stiftung Oper in Berlin.
From its beginnings, the Staatsballett Berlin has been shaped by distinguished artistic leadership. Founding artistic director Vladimir Malakhov (2004–2014) established a broad repertoire marked by world premieres, rediscoveries of rare works, and pieces by influential choreographers such as George Balanchine, Maurice Béjart, Mauro Bigonzetti, and Angelin Preljocaj. Nacho Duato, artistic director from 2014 to 2018, brought his highly personal movement language to the company, alongside works by Jiří Kylián and Ohad Naharin.
Later artistic phases expanded the repertoire further, embracing contemporary choreographic perspectives and audience dialogue. Since the 2023/24 season, the Staatsballett Berlin has been led by artistic director Christian Spuck, whose vision combines new creations by leading choreographers with the preservation of the classical ballet heritage. This artistic profile has earned international recognition, including being named «Company of the Year» and «Highlight of the Year» by tanz magazine critics.
