About
Deutsche Oper am Rhein (DOR) creates outstanding music theater and ballet that reflect the spirit of our time while preserving and reimagining cultural heritage. As an open, international, and diverse artistic community, we foster excellence, innovation, participation, and young talent. We see our venues and projects as welcoming spaces for dialogue, emotion, and shared experience—shaping the future of the performing arts sustainably and inclusively in Düsseldorf, Duisburg, and beyond.
Deutsche Oper am Rhein (DOR) is a unique theater partnership between the cities of Düsseldorf and Duisburg. We produce and present opera and ballet in repertoire, complemented by innovative participatory formats, outreach projects, and productions for young audiences. With around 600 employees from more than 40 nations, DOR is an international artistic home for the largest ensemble of solo opera singers in Germany, the Ballett am Rhein with 45 dancers, the opera chorus, and two renowned partner orchestras: the Duisburg Philharmonic and the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra. Each season, over 300 guest artists from around the world join our stages.
Our work is rooted in artistic excellence and driven by the pulse of our time. We develop contemporary music theater and ballet while reinterpreting classical works and preserving cultural heritage. Our performances take place not only in our main venues—the Düsseldorf Opera House and the Duisburg Theater—but also throughout urban spaces, bringing art closer to everyday life.
We see ourselves as welcoming hosts, creating open, safe, and inclusive spaces for dialogue, emotion, reflection, and shared experiences. Diversity, mutual respect, and collaboration define both our artistic output and our workplace culture. As a sustainable, forward-looking institution, we nurture young talent, invest in professional development, and continuously refine our practices.
