About
The Washington Ballet (TWB) is a cultural cornerstone of the nation’s capital, committed to bringing the joy and artistry of world-class classical and contemporary ballet to our city and the world.
Our legacy began with The Washington School of Ballet (TWSB), founded in 1944 by Mary Day and Lisa Gardiner. TWSB is internationally recognized for its rigorous classical training and pursuit of excellence.
In 1976, Mary Day formalized the professional company, The Washington Ballet, to provide a showcase for the budding talents of the school. For generations since, we have shaped the artistic life of the DMV through bold performances, innovative collaborations, and an enduring connection to community.
Today, led by Artistic Director Edwaard Liang, TWB performs a wide repertory on major stages across the region. Together, TWB and TWSB are committed to accessibility and well-being and building a culture of belonging that reflects the vibrancy of our community and inspires the future of dance.
